Crabby pants.

I don't know how it happened but at about 6:14 p.m. today I got real crabby. I also couldn't seem to think straight, so everything was more difficult than it needed to be, from carrying a box in a way that makes sense to walking in the right direction to my car. I tried to shake it off in several separate attempts but it's still there, underneath my furrowed brow. I am sorry if my crabbiness comes through the Internets and ruins this post for you.

Someone needs a nap.

Hmph.

EXERCISE
I tried to walk off the bad mood in Pleasantville where my weekly class takes place. It didn't work. There were all these rude teenagers everywhere. And cars, with people driving them. There are no sidewalks in Pleasantville so this was a problem. Last time I walked there it was like Suburban Utopia. This time it was just Suburbia. The walk made me hot and my scarf got all itchy on my neck. But I walked for 20 minutes so whatever.

Health Tip of The Day: Don't read this post if you are in a good mood. Too late? Okay, the end of the "Islam" section should help. You might want to skip the beginning. Just sayin'.

ISLAM
Our weekly halaqa (class) with Sh. Hatem got off to a rough start since I was hot, tired, and furthermore annoyed that after FIVE WEEKS the men were still using our bathroom while theirs is under what seems to be perpetual renovation, forcing me to go to the building next door to freshen up. That helped a bit. But when class began, I went dumb again and had literally no idea what the sheikh was talking about. I mean I kinda sorta got it in a very broad way but the details were so murky I was totally lost the whole time. He's way too smart for us most of the time and today he was off the charts. These two kids were also running around and having fun in the room which of course bugged me today—Why can't I be having fun?? To shorten this painful story I will just say that I excused myself halfway through the social hour and asked a kind sister to take care of the tea cleanup. It was the only thing to do.

I played the Quran in the car on the way home and listened to Surah TaHa, which turns out to be about 20 minutes long on my CD. When I got home, I read some of the translation on Quran.com. The surah is very long and tells most of the story of Musa (Moses) peace and blessings be upon him and his interactions with Pharoah including the parting of the Sea. But the best part is the beginning. I'll share just a few short lines which are so encompassing of the religion and of the mercy of Allah.

We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed

But only as a reminder for those who fear [ Allah ] -
A revelation from He who created the earth and highest heavens,
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.

It's hard to be cranky after reading this. I saw in the Tafseer of Ibn Katheer (you're right Salihah—it IS a tongue-twister!) that people used to hang onto ropes while standing in prayer for long periods of time. Allah tells us we don't have to do that—the Quran and His beautiful deen should be a comfort, not a burden. MashaAllah. May Allah make me of those who will be rewarded for their patience.

  1. Did you get crabby because of me? I saw you around 6:14 :(

  2. I knew you would think that! NO!!!! I almost changed the time because I didn't want you to get the wrong idea. I think it was the weather. And the wind. And my inability to sort out the junk in the purple tub while in the BB storage. And on and on.

You were a bright spot in my day—well, two bright spots since I saw you in the morning and the evening. Alhamdulillah!

  3. I just read that one of the Prophet's wives ﷺ used to tie a rope at the masjid between two pillars so she could lean on when she got tired while praying. He ordered to be taken down saying we should not exhaust ourselves even in prayer, and give our body sleep when it is tired.

I really like the ayat you shared!
